Philosophical Society of Macedonia

Filozofsko drustvo na MakedonijaPhilosophical Society of Macedonia is a civil society organization dedicated on the promotion of philosophy and its teaching in the Republic of Macedonia. The Society exists for more then 40 years, but in its current form functions since 2003. Starting from this year, The Philosophical Society of Macedonia has realized lots of projects and established numerous collaborations with institutions and associations from the country on projects in the field of philosophy, but also few interdisciplinary projects. In more than a decade of work, many philosophical lectures, discussions, scientific conferences and symposiums have been held out of which we will mention few: the Symposium dedicated on Immanuel Kant (Bitola, June 2004), the hosting of the Regional conference of the Association of Philosophers from Southeastern Europe in 2007 and the traditional International Philosophical Dialogue East-West (Skopje – Sveti Nikole – Ohrid) organized together with the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MASA) and the International Slavic University “Gavrilo Romanovich Derzhavin”.

The Society since 2006 is a member of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies – FISP (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de Philosophie), and is a publisher of two philosophical journals: Филозофија / Filozofija – A Journal of Philosophical Inquiry and Филозофска трибина (Philosophical Debate), the first of which is international and the second national. The first Macedonian philosophical journal Philosophical Debate has been financially supported by the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Macedonia in the years 2014 and 2015.

One of the main activities of the Society since 2003 is also the organization of scientific conferences and symposiums for the World Day of Philosophy which has been established by UNESCO in 2002 and is celebrated all throughout the world. As part of the World Day of Philosophy in Macedonia the Philosophical Society of Macedonia has organized symposiums and conferences dedicated on thinkers like: George Berekley, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Auguste Comte, Arthur Schopenhauer, David Hume and Charles Darwin, but also conferences focused on specific problems: “Philosophy and the Macedonian language”, “Philosophy on a Crossroad: Analytical and/or Continental Philosophy”, “Philosophy Today”, “Philosophy and Education”, “Philosophy and Politics” and this year’s symposium – “Freedom and Modernity”. As a recognition of the significance of this manifestation in 2013 and 2014 patron of the World Day of Philosophy in Macedonia was the President of the Republic of Macedonia.

From the numerous institutions and organizations with whom the Society has collaborated in the past years we will mention few: the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the French Institute in Skopje (Month of French philosophy and Philosophical Film Festival), Goethe-Institut Skopje (Month of German Philosophy), Confucius Institute at the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University – Skopje (Month of Eastern Philosophy), Brittish Embassy (Month of Brittish Philosophy), Turkish Cultural Center “Yunus Emre” – Skopje (Philosophical Film Festival), Association of classical philologists “Antika” (three interdisciplinary and international symposiums), EU Info Center in Skopje, Faculty of Music – Skopje, Orthodox Theological Faculty “St. Clement of Ohrid” – Skopje, International Slavic University “Gavrilo Romanovich Derzhavin” – Sveti Nikole – Bitola, as well as the long and fruitful collaboration of the Society with the Institute of Philosophy, Philosophical Faculty – Skopje. Besides this, the Philosophical Society of Macedonia organizes promotions of books, open lectures and is continuously dedicated on promoting philosophical culture and values in the Republic of Macedonia.

In 2013, after the proven success of the previous editions of the Philosophical Film Festival, the Philosophical Society of Macedonia has taken the Festival under its wing and since 2013 it organizes it as a cultural manifestation of the Society. As part of the Society exists a Comission for Film and Philosophy (coordinator: Ana Dishlieska Mitova), whose team makes up the Organizational Board of the Festival responsible for its successful realization.
